Cryptocurrency has proven to be more than a fad, with multiple projects popping out regularly. Worldwide USDC adoption has been increasing lately, with many countries outside the US seeing value in this versatile stablecoin.

In this article, let’s look at the basics of USDC and what it can offer to the global market.

What USDC is and How it’s Minted

Short for the US Dollar Coin, the USDC is an ERC-20 token tethered to the US Dollar and follows a framework based on financial transparency, compliance, and openness. This token is issued by the CENTRE consortium, a group founded by industry bigwigs Circle and Coinbase.

USDC differentiates itself from other crypto tokens by having a 1:1 value with the US Dollar. Minting of these tokens happens upon deposit of the currency on bank reserves, ensuring stability and low volatility to token holders.

Vast Usability of USDC

For Payments

With the various benefits of crypto payments, USDC adoption as a viable option is gradually seen among companies and individuals. Besides lower transaction fees and faster processing, USDC also offers better reliability than its crypto peers.

Payments using USDC can be added to invoices and sent through different means, including QR codes and wallet-to-wallet transfers. Major crypto wallet firms like Coinbase and Crypto.com have also launched USDC debit cards. This lets holders tap into their USDC balances for quick, seamless, in-person retail transactions.

For Trading

Due to being rooted in the US Dollar, USDC is considered one of the most liquid cryptocurrencies in the market. As such, Binance, Coinbase, and most crypto exchange platforms offer spot trading and margin trading with USDC tokens for effective trade execution while bypassing volatility.

Uniswap and other decentralized exchanges (DEX) also use USDC to swap and trade tokens, with DeFi protocols integrating this stablecoin as a benchmark for trading and liquidity pools. Furthermore, liquidity providers, also known as market makers, utilize the stability of USDC for arbitrage transactions and high-frequency trading algorithms.

For Lending

Aside from advantages as a payment option or in crypto trading, lenders are seeing the potential of USDC for lending on DeFi protocols. USDC has programmatic composability, making the software modular and easy and efficient to modify based on the transaction.

With USDC, borrowers can leverage USDC loans as collateral to secure other assets, while lenders can profit by supplying lending pools with USDC tokens. The continuous adoption of blockchain technology will open more utilization for USDC, potentially allowing financial opportunities that bypass geographic limitations.

Why Shift to Stablecoins like USDC?

The crypto market is populated with many projects that change value on a whim. However, stablecoins offer potential investors a reliable form of cryptocurrency with more utility outside the blockchain. The USDC shows significant adoption due to its versatility, with more countries outside the US taking on this stablecoin.
